NOVA Scotland

The majority of ex-forces personnel transition well to civilian life, but for some, factors such as poor physical or mental health, homelessness, debt, health issues, PTSD, or alcohol, drug or gambling misuse can lead them into contact with the justice system.

NOVA Scotland collaborates with Police Scotland, the Scottish Prison Service, and Criminal Justice Social Work teams from the 32 local authorities in Scotland to offer a holistic, person-centred approach that helps vulnerable veterans address their challenges, rebuild their lives and move beyond the justice system.

Once referred, each veteran is assigned a dedicated NOVA Scotland caseworker, who will conduct a full individual needs assessment and support them throughout their journey of change.

NOVA Scotland works to engage veterans in healthcare services, including registration with GPs and, for those with mental health needs, referrals to NHS Scotland’s specialist veterans’ mental health provision – Veterans 1st Point (V1P).

Our knowledge of the support services available in Scotland, both service charities and other third-sector organisations, enables us to ensure that veterans can access the most appropriate help possible, as locally as possible.

Importantly, we foster community connections that help veterans build and sustain their health and well-being, enabling them to fulfil their potential and positively contribute to the communities in which they live and work.

NOVA Scotland operates across the entirety of Scotland, providing support to all veterans who have served at least one day in the Armed Forces, Reserves, or Merchant Mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations. Assistance is also available for the families of veterans who are involved in the justice system.

Any statutory organisation can make a referral using our single referral pathway. Additionally, veterans or their families are welcome to self-refer. We ensure that all calls are handled confidentially and without judgment.
