Since leaving he has been a director and trustee in a number of charitable organisations comprising large national organisations and smaller regional charities with an emphasis on veterans’ groups and those in and around the justice system.

He was awarded an MBE in 2009 birthday honours list and was the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire in 2022/23. Mac is the President of the Royal British Legion in South and West Yorkshire and the Chairman of Yorkshire Crimebeat. He is a Deputy Lieutenant of South Yorkshire.

Mac was a keen but inelegant skier, is a disgraceful but honest golfer and likes reading, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
